THE NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE BOARD STATEMENT ON ZHARYIA

Wednesday August 28, 2019 Providenciales, Turks And Caicos Islands The National Health Insurance Board would like to once again extend heartfelt condolences to the Stubbs family on the passing of their daughter Zharyia Stubbs. The loss of any family member is difficult, and even more so when a parent loses a child.

While patient confidentiality protocols prevent us from going into the details of Zharyia’s treatment through the National Health Insurance Plan over the past two-plus years, we can clarify and confirm that the organization accessed all possible avenues to provide Zharyia with medical treatment through the Treatment Abroad Program. Because of the urgency of Zharyia’s medical case she was on many occasions airlifted (Medical evacuation) to and from healthcare facilities in four countries including the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

In 2018 Zharyia was airlifted to the United Kingdom through the UK Overseas Territories Referral Program, which allows for medical care in the United Kingdom for extraordinary cases. All necessary arrangements were made to ensure that Zharyia received the specialized medical attention needed, including a monthly stipend for the Stubbs family from the NHIB.

The NHIB was saddened by the news of Zharyia’s passing on July 17, 2019 and is continuing to work diligently to assist the Stubbs family with bringing Zharyia home. Unfortunately, there have been a number of logistical challenges encountered with the process in the UK, despite all requisite payments having been made by NHIB.

The National Health Insurance Board is continuing to work with the funeral home service companies in the TCI and in the United Kingdom to assist the Stubbs family with bringing Zharyia home.

The National Health Insurance Board (NHIB) remains committed to providing high quality healthcare options to all NHIP registrants and would like to once again extend condolences to the bereaved Stubbs family.
